DSSR Secure MEP Design Works for the Zochonis Building at The University of Manchester

DSSR has been appointed as the MEP design consultancy for a major refurbishment of the Zochonis Building at The University of Manchester, marking another significant step in the university’s sustainability journey.

Originally intended as a phased maintenance programme, DSSR’s early-stage involvement through detailed surveys and condition reporting uncovered that much of the building’s existing M&E infrastructure would become life-expired within the next decade. This critical insight prompted the university to accelerate its plans for a full-scale M&E replacement, aligning closely with its zero-carbon targets.

The transformation of the Zochonis Building will include the removal of existing gas boilers, which will be replaced with air source heat pumps — a key step in reducing the building’s carbon footprint. Additional upgrades will feature rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels, high-efficiency lighting with advanced control systems, and a fully integrated Building Management System (BMS). The project will also improve the building envelope, with enhanced insulation for external walls and the roof to maximise thermal performance.

Inside, the building will undergo a comprehensive redesign to improve natural ventilation and spatial efficiency, creating a future-proofed environment for teaching and research.
